Stay Positive: Here are 23 Pieces of Good News Regarding COVID-19

Trying to help…

Check out Number 23!

Headlines continuously read distressing news regarding the virus so we can all take advanced safety measures to protect not just ourselves, but also those around us.

Yet, there’s a handful of worldwide news doling out glimmers of hope in the midst of frightening times, and that’s important too.

So, we’ve rounded up all the good news about the virus worth catching up on.

Read on and click through the slideshow above for all the happy headlines we’re highlighting.

1. Of about 80,000 people sick from COVID-19 in China, more than 70% have recovered and been discharged from hospitals
Per the World Health Organization last week, “Of the 80,000 reported COVID-19 cases in China, more than 70% have recovered and been discharged.”

2. Scientists have figured out how the novel coronavirus breaks into human cells, which will help significantly in developing treatments
After scientists revealed the first picture of how the novel coronavirus binds with human respiratory cells to produce more viruses, researchers in China have solidified images all the way down to the level of the atoms at the binding points, according to Live Science. With this news, understanding how the virus enters cells will significantly aid researchers in finding drugs and vaccines to fight the virus.

3. Due to high levels of self-quarantine, Codogno, one of the two coronavirus clusters in Italy, has reported significantly fewer infections per day
Compared to 35 cases per day at the beginning of the outbreak, just five new infections were announced last week by Codogno’s mayor, Francesco Passerini, according to the U.S. News and World Report. “It is a war. It is a war, but we have every possibility of winning,” Passerini said. “Unlike with our grandfathers, who went physically into battle for our freedom, we are being required to show responsibility — responsibility and calm.”

4. Scientists in Canada have made massive breakthroughs in an effort to develop a vaccine
A team of Canadian scientists has finally isolated and grown copies of the coronavirus, which may now help scientists study the pathogen to develop better testing, treatments, vaccines, and gain a better understanding of its biology, the team said in a statement alongside the New York Post.

5. China is testing five different vaccine options, claiming it could have a vaccine ready by next month
Eight different institutes in China are working on five different inoculations to battle the novel coronavirus, according to the South China Morning Post. “According to our estimates, we are hopeful that in April some of the vaccines will enter clinical research or be of use in emergency situations,” said Zheng Zhongwei, director of the National Health Commission’s Science and Technology Development Center. While it’s true that it would take at least 12 to 18 months to provide a safe vaccine to general public, under Chinese law, they could be released sooner for urgent use in a major public health emergency, provided the benefits outweigh the risks, noted the New York Post.

6. Vaccination trials in the U.S. are already underway
A trial of Moderna’s vaccine has already kickstarted at Kaiser Permanente under Washington’s Health Research Institute in Seattle, of which will hopefully confirm the safety of the vaccine prior to mass production.

7. A team of infectious disease experts calculated the fatality rate of Wuhan’s coronavirus outbreak is about 1.4%, drastically lower than earlier estimates
While this estimate and data applies directly to Wuhan, where the novel coronavirus outbreak began, it offers a hopeful guide to the rest of the world as it notes significantly lower estimate of earlier stats around 3%. A full breakdown of the data can be found at Stat News.

8. Distilleries across the U.S. are making their own hand sanitizers and giving it away for free
Perhaps many Americans can calm down on the panic buying, as according to the Associated Press, distilleries across the country are using high-proof alcohol to make hand sanitizer, and divvying it out for free, or by donation to combat the novel coronavirus.

9. Air pollution has plummeted in cities with high numbers of quarantined individuals, Venice’s waters are running clear
Analysts from the Washington Post have noted a drastic decrease in major greenhouses gases over Europe as individuals self-quarantine and cars stay parked at home. While it’s little comfort to a country ravaged by the novel coronavirus, it highlights the impact humans can make on the environment. “I expect pollution to drop even further as the particles in the atmosphere get either dispersed or absorbed,” Emanuele Massetti, an expert on the economics of climate change at Georgia Tech University who has studied Italy’s climate policies, told the Washington Post. “In a few days, they will enjoy the cleanest air ever in northern Italy.”

10. A Johns Hopkins researcher has claimed antibodies from recovered coronavirus patients could help protect people at risk
A treatment that can be made readily available under urgent circumstances, a team from Johns Hopkins alongside many other researchers are studying whether or not the antibodies of those recovered from the coronavirus could help protect at-risk humans from the virus. “Deployment of this option requires no research or development,” immunologist Arturo Casadevall told Science Alert. “It could be deployed within a couple of weeks since it relies on standard blood-banking practices.” Not to mention, a Japanese pharmaceutical company is nearing approval of the treatment.

11. South Korea recoveries are starting to outnumber new infections
Facing the largest epidemic outside of China, South Korea reported more recoveries from the coronavirus than new infections on Friday for the first time since its outbreak emerged in January, as a downward trend in daily cases raised hopes that Asia’s biggest epidemic outside China may be slowing, according to India Today.

12. China is getting its feet back on the ground, opening parks and athletics, loosening travel restrictions
As the novel coronavirus comes under control in China, parks and tourist attractions have reopened across the country, alongside loosened travel restrictions. “The National Health Commission said on Thursday that the outbreak had passed its peak, and the figures appear to support its claim,” said the South China Morning Post. “On Friday, authorities in mainland China reported just 11 new Covid-19 cases, of which four were in Hubei.” According to ESPN, even professional basketball has reemerged  in Asia.

13. China has also closed its last coronavirus hospital, not enough new cases to support them
China has shut down all 16 temporary coronavirus hospitals in Wuhan as cases of coronavirus have began to dwindle. “The final group of 49 patients walked out of the Wuchang temporary hospital in the capital of Hubei province on Tuesday afternoon to cheers,” according to the Xinhua news agency.

14. Australian researchers are in the midst of testing two drugs as cures to the virus
Scientists in Australia claim to have identified how the body’s immune system fights the novel coronavirus. Published in Nature Medicine journal on Tuesday, the research shows people are recovering from the virus like they would from the flu. “This [discovery] is important because it is the first time where we are really understanding how our immune system fights novel coronavirus,” study co-author Prof Katherine Kedzierska told BBC News.

15. Numerous businesses have stepped up to solve the crisis
Restaurants, sports, and businesses are all stepping up to combat the community effects of the novel coronavirus. The sports world is raising money for stadium employeesUber Eats is divvying out free delivery to help independent restaurantsprofessional soccer players are entertaining viewers with a FIFA tournamentrestaurants are doling out free food to those in need, and Bill Gates is funneling out millions of dollars to speed up development of a coronavirus treatment, to name just a few out of dozens.

“MetroHealth Medical Center becomes the first hospital in the state that can now test COVID-19 samples at its laboratory with results available after just two hours,” released News 5 Cleveland. While supplies are limited, it notes a significant step toward expansive testing of the novel coronavirus.

18. Scientists in Israel have also noted the potential to annouce development of a coronavirus vaccine within weeks
Israeli scientists are nearing development of the first vaccine to combat the novel coronavirus, according to Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis. The vaccine could be ready within a few weeks and available in 90 days, according to a release.

19. A San Diego biotech company is developing a coronavirus vaccine in collaboration with Duke University and National University of Singapore
As the race to develop a vaccine for the novel coronavirus continues globally, the San Diego-based biotech company, Arcturus Therapeutics, is working on creating one at its lab. The company is working alongside Duke NUS-Medical School, a partnership between Duke University and the National University of Singapore. While developing a vaccine that works hasn’t yet proven impossible, “The major challenge with vaccines is the size of the dose and the feasibility of manufacturing,” President and CEO, Joseph Payne, told CBS8.

20. A Japanese flu drug has proven effective in treating the novel coronavirus
Zhang Xinmin, an official at China’s science and technology ministry, said favipiravir, developed by a subsidiary of Fujifilm, had produced encouraging outcomes in clinical trials in Wuhan and Shenzhen involving 340 patients, according to The Guardian. “It has a high degree of safety and is clearly effective in treatment,” Zhang told reporters on Tuesday.

5 Signs You’re Ready To Date Again After A Breakup

It’s not exactly a hot take to say that breakups can be really hard and painful. However, there’s one silver lining about ending a relationship (although it may take awhile for you to see it). Now that you’re single, you’re free to fall in love again, and this next one might just be the greatest love of your life. Honestly, that’s a pretty freaking exciting prospect. But in order to be ready for new love, your heart has to be open and willing to recognize the signs you’re ready to date again after a breakup.

But how do you know when you’re ready to get back out there and start dating again after a breakup? According to Diana Dorell, intuitive dating coach and author of The Dating Mirror: Trust Again, Love Again, it’s all about how you’re feeling instead of how long it’s been since the breakup. “Many experts say it takes half the time you were with someone to get over them, but in my experience, it’s less about the amount of time and more about the depth of the connection. If it’s someone you knew you were lukewarm about and just stayed in it because of convenience, it will feel much easier to date another person, even if you were together a ‘long’ time,” Dorell tells Elite Daily. But here’s the tricky part: The signs that you’re healed and ready to date again can be really subtle. Unless, of course, you know what you’re looking for. Here are what the experts say are good indications that you’re ready to get your flirt on and start dating again.

1. Thoughts Of Your Ex No Longer Trigger Painful Emotions

Social media, specifically your ex’s social media, can be a good barometer for how over them (or not) you are, as Connell Barrett, Dating Transformation founder and executive dating coach, tells Elite Daily. “When it no longer hurts to think about your ex or to see them on social media, it’s a sign that your heart has healed and you’re ready to find someone else to give it to,” he explains.

Dorell agrees, saying that if you’re still checking your ex’s Insta regularly and the experience is bittersweet, you might still have some healing to do.

2. Your General Mood Has Improved

“A sure-fire sign you’re ready to date again is consistently being in a good mood,” says Barrett. “There’s a spring in your step. It’s like the world has gone from black-and-white to color again. That means the fog of the breakup has lifted. You’ve let go of all that sadness, anger and insecurity. You feel good about yourself and your worth, and you’re ready to get back in the game,” he explains.

3. Your Life Feels Full As A Single Person

It’s all about being comfortable in your own single skin, explains Dorell. “You are looking to add value to another person’s life, versus trying to get an ego trip or validation from dating because you are not yet healed from the breakup,” she says. “You have a full life — friends, work, health, self-care, and are again looking to share that with another person. You aren’t using dating as a tool to escape from yourself.”

4. You Can Reflect On Your Past Relationship Positively

After a breakup, it can feel like the whole relationship was bad news because the way it ended has become a source of pain for you. “[However,] when you can find more good than bad in your past relationship, it means you’ve risen above the negativity and grown into a better person,” explains Barrett. “This is part of the healing process and a big clue that you’re emotionally preparing for the next chapter.”

5. You’re Open To A New Relationship

Trina Leckie, breakup coach and host of the Breakup BOOST podcast, tells Elite Daily that “[when] you no longer feel like they’re the only person for you, and that you can’t live without them, and the thought of meeting someone new excites you,” that’s a really good sign that you’re ready to get back out there.

Are any of these signs resonating? Well then, it’s quite possible you’re either ready, or on the road to being ready, to date again. If so, the experts say you have two options to ease into the world of romance. As Dorrell suggests, “Don’t just go with the ‘popular’ dating app. Check them out and see how your body feels when you use it. If it contracts, that may be a sign that it’s not the best avenue for you right now.” Or, if you’re feeling confident, follow Barrett’s advice: “When you’re ready to date, take immediate action — any action! What you do is not as important as doing something, to get momentum. Tell your friends you’re ready to date, and ask them to be on the look-out for great, high-quality people to introduce you to. Try a fun, new dating app that you’ve never used before. Hit the town with your crew and talk to an attractive stranger or two. New actions propel you forward, giving you a big boost of confidence and excitement about meeting your next significant other.”

Whichever path you chose, Leckie says attitude is everything. “Maintain a positive mindset and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Know that someone will come along at the right time,” she says. “Like attracts like, so be who you want to attract.”

If you’re still not sure where your heart is, Dorell says the best sign you’re ready for a new love is that you’re comfortable being single. “You don’t ‘need’ to date — you are choosing to because you have something to offer. You’re not looking to ‘get,’ and that is very attractive. Sounds weird, I know, but if you’re starting to date from a place of filling a hole that you need to fill yourself, you’ll find yourself repeating old patterns and attracting short-term connections,” she concludes.

Ultimately, it’s just about taking your time, checking in with yourself and what you really desire, and, when you’re ready, getting back out there. You got this.

7 Clear Signs It’s the Right Time to Meet the Parents

Look at those cute kids!

Whether you’re meeting your partner’s parents or your partner meeting yours, timing is of the essence! These signs will tell you if you’re ready.

Do not introduce your girlfriend or boyfriend to your parents just for the sake of doing so. Do it when you are both ready. Figuring out when the right time is will, of course, have a lot to do with how strict or relaxed your parents are. If they are laid back then go right ahead and plan something casual. Just remember to be sure that your partner is comfortable with it as well.

It may not be a big deal on your part, but it will be a big deal to your partner as meeting the folks is a surefire way to validate the seriousness of your relationship.

If your parents are more formal in the sense that a suit and tie at dinner is called for, then perhaps you should take more time to prep your partner beforehand so he or she knows what to expect. Either way, all parties have to be ready for the meeting if you want it to be a success.

I have a friend who has very traditional and conservative parents. They have made it very clear that they are only interested in meeting their kids’ partners only once they have decided that they want to marry them. Some parents are just that way and you cannot fault them for being so set in their traditional ways. If you have parents like these, then just play ball with them and only introduce your partner to them when things are very serious.

7 signs it’s time to meet the parents

In my case, I met my fiancé’s parents at his brother’s birthday party. As wonderful as the meeting was, it was probably not the best idea for us to meet at such a huge and lively event. We were not able to talk very much as there were too many relatives and friends stopping by to say hello.

My advice is to plan something more intimate so that everyone has the chance to properly get to know one another, but of course, that is your prerogative. In any case, here are 7 signs that it is probably time to meet the folks.

#1 You are mutually exclusive. You will know that it’s the right time to meet the parents once you are mutually exclusive. There is no point in putting everyone through the paces of getting to know one another if your relationship is not going to last. Once you have decided that you are going to be saddled with your partner indefinitely, it is probably the right moment to make the introduction to your parents. [Read: 16 signs you’re not ready to be exclusive]

#2 Your partner has met your friends. If your partner has hung out with your friends on more than one occasion, then it is safe to say that he or she may be ready to meet the folks. There is less pressure when it comes to meeting a group of friends and if you partner passes with flying colors, then think about amping it up a notch and introducing him or her to your parents.

#3 Your partner has met your other family members. Whether your partner has met other family members by pure chance or intentionally, once he or she has met an extended family member, it is probably time to meet the parents.

For example, you and your boyfriend may have run into your aunt at the supermarket and you introduced them so as not to be rude. Remember that people talk. And if your family is anything at all like mine, they will talk a lot. News will spread like wildfire that your aunt met your boyfriend before your parents did.

Even chance encounters such as these can lead to massive family drama, so take the bull by the horns and set up a lunch date with your parents sooner rather than later. The same can be said if you introduce your girlfriend to your sister over cocktails and tapas. What makes you think your sister is not going to report everything to your mum? Expectations will be set, pre-judgments will be made and before you know it, your parents will be harping on you to introduce them to your special someone.

#4 You talk about the future. Once you start thinking in terms of “us” instead of “me” then you know that the timing is right. If you see yourself being with your partner for a long time, then the next course of action is to make him or her a part of your life. That means meeting the people who created you. This step will certainly make your partner happy as it serves as validation that you are taking things to the next level.

#5 The idea isn’t intimidating to you. If the idea of your partner meeting your folks does not scare the bejeezus out of you, then what are you waiting for? This is a good sign as it indicates that you are comfortable with the two worlds colliding. Ensure that your partner feels the same way and not to push him or her if they are not ready.

#6 You are proud of your partner. It is undoubtedly harder to introduce your parents to your slacker boyfriend than it is to introduce them to someone who has his shit together. If you are proud of who you are with, it is inevitable that you would want everyone to know about his or her accomplishments. You want the people you care about to see just why you are so in love with this person.

#7 Everyone is ready. I suppose if you cannot figure out when the “right time” is, then just take it easy and only set up a meeting once everyone is mentally ready. Speak to your parents about this special someone and gauge their reaction when you suggest a meeting. Do the same with your partner. Once you think that everyone is comfortable enough to take the next step, then you will know that it is the perfect time.

Meeting the parents for the first time is a huge step whether you think so or not. You will be surprised at how many relationships go awry just because the initial meeting with immediate family members did not go as planned.

As much as you love your partner, what your family thinks also carries weight, especially if you are close to them. Never underestimate a parent’s intuition when determining if their child is with the right person. Parents have a bizarre sixth sense when it comes to stuff like that, so take you time and do not rush it. You will know when the time is right.

With these clear signs for checking if you’re ready to introduce each other to your respective families, you can find the right time to make the proper introductions. Now all you need to worry about is making a great first impression on them!

Rebecca – Chapter 17 – The Return – Part 1

“I look down into my vermilion Manhattan and contemplate my life. The brandied berry offers no quarter.”

I texted Rebecca back with a warm response. Not too much exuberance. Let her know I’ve been busy and that it was great to hear from her.

I had to be cautious. I’ve cut all of the crazy people that caused me pain out of my life.

Not that Rebecca had done that, but at this point I had to be careful.

I just have to be cautious now because I don’t want any drama in my life anymore. I only surround myself with good people.

Period.

“I know you’re busy, and I know I’ve been absent, but I would really like to catch up with you and see you even if it’s only for one drink.”

No matter what’s going on with Rebecca or any of the other women friends in my life, I can’t refuse if they reach out to me.

I’m overjoyed at my age that I get to spend time with these lovely ladies, and they trust and respect me enough to want to hang with me.

I’m honored.

“Where shall we meet?”

A day passes.

“Ranstead Room, Thursday night after 8pm.”

“Perfect. I’ll see you then. Looking forward to catching up.”

I have to keep it light.

Quite frankly, I’m counting the days. We have history. Our previous dates. Unrequited love. Lust. I don’t know. I don’t know what this is, or what she wants. But somehow I’m driven to meet her. For god’s sake… this girl’s been gone for two years!

I’m a beauty addict and I can’t resist the draw of a lovely girl. I could be in the worst mood, and if a pretty girl comes in the salon and chats with me, it all falls away.

I understand the drop of dopamine, and live for it to extinguish my ever-present anxiety and depression. No one knows what it’s like except those that have it, but it’s a real thing. Some of us have risen above it without medicine, because there wasn’t any when we were growing up in the 60’s and 70’s.

I’m sitting in the Ranstead Room. It’s a back alley bar that’s sort of a speakeasy in the city. I know Rebecca knows about it, or I would have guided her properly, but she’ll be here soon.

I’m at a booth.

Alone.

I have a very expensive, toxic cocktail before me. The room is always dark. Dark blues, and R&B fill the room. Tasteful paintings of nude women adorn the walls. The bar is illuminated by candles. The men’s room is adorned with a photo of a young, handsome Ron Jeremy. The music that plays is some sweet R&B from the 70’s. This place is Disney perfect for a cool retro speakeasy in 2020.

What am I doing here?

I just want to have a drink with my friend, I assure my lying self.

I miss Rebecca. I’ve been struggling with Cherie and her schedule. I’m not justifying, we’re fine, but it would be nice to meet with Rebecca for a minute and catch up.

What if she doesn’t show up?

I look down into my vermilion Manhattan and contemplate my life.

The brandied berry offers no quarter.

The air in the bar moves…

The door opens, and everything changes.

A young woman enters the bar. She’s 24. Her hair is brown and flows about her face like ribbons of dark chocolate. She’s wearing a one piece dark blue dress. It clings to her every curve. It ends at the beginning of her caramel thighs. She’s wearing heels that have ribbon straps that are tied around her ankles.

Her legs are spectacular.

I’m stunned.

She runs her fingers through her hair and throws it off to the side in a wave, as she strides toward me. Her skin is darker from the South American sun.

I’m speechless.

“Is this seat taken, sir?”

I’m losing my mind even after a potent cocktail at the sight of this exquisite beauty.

“Umm… It’s yours… Rebecca.”

Why does she always have this power over me?

Don’t question it, Be cool.

“Can I get a Cosmo?” she says as she eases into the booth like a cat. (Totally wrong drink to order in a place like this)

Rebecca looks so beautiful I want to bash by head on the table. But I must remain cool so I don’t lose my 50 years of experience.

God… She’s breathtaking.

She places her order and the drink arrives. “Did you bring me here to hide me, Chaz?”

I like that she called me Chaz.

“No. I just like this bar for its discretion.”

Rebecca takes my hands in hers. (dainty fingers tipped with manicured white polished nails)

“It’s good to see you again, Rebecca. You look amazing. It’s been so long. What’ve you been up to? I thought you were going away for three to six months, but you’ve been away for two years.”

“I know… I thought maybe you forgot about me.”

“Well, yea, I kinda did.”

“What?”

“I’m kidding! Come on… what was it like? I’m just happy you’re okay and you’re sitting right here now.”

“You look good too. Maybe a little older…”

“Stop. I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that,”

“No… I’m sorry. I just meant you looked good. Distinguished.”

“Alright. Decent save. So… what was it like down there?”

“It was amazing working with all of those people in South America. An eye opening experience. I’m sorry I was out of touch, but once I got down there I sort of lost touch with everything but the work.”

“Really? It was that immersive?”

“Yea. Like nothing I’ve ever experienced.”

“Well, I’d love to hear all about it!”

“Can we wait to get to all of that until next time?”

“Umm.. yea. No problem.” (odd)

“To be honest, I’ve been a bit lost, Charles.”

I like that she’s using the real name, too.

“That’s okay, I’ve been there too.”

Rebecca squeezed my hands, “I’m tired of that.”

“Yea, I mean… me too.”

“I’m really happy to see you. You’ve always been amazing to me.”

“Rebecca, I’m just happy to see you.”

“Yea, but you’ve always been different to me. You’re not like anybody I know.”

“I get that a lot. Because I don’t want anything. I just like being alone.”

“Me too, but I’m happy you agreed to meet me tonight.”

“How’s Lorelei?”

She’s great. Went from hostess, to food runner to server at Bar Bom Bon and is killing it. Still vegan and in a relationship with Kyle for the past 5 years. So, solid kid.” (While describing her my signature move is to whip out my phone and show the person I’m talking to a recent photo of her.)

‘That’s great. I’m glad she’s doing well. Wow, she’s so beautiful.”

Everybody says that about my daughter. It’s like they’re amazed that came through me.

“It’s great to see you after all of this time, Rebecca. I honestly didn’t think I’d ever see you again.”

“Why?”

I don’t know. I just felt that we were in two different worlds, and you’d moved on like so many others. We’ve lost a lot of the old crew.”

“Oh, thanks a lot, so I’m like ‘so many others’...”

“No. I just thought that young people get busy and they move on to career, relationships and family.”

Rebecca took a long pull on her drink. “Not all of us, Chaz. What are you up to?”

“I’m doing everything I can to never go back to the rat race. I work at the salon and will be managing a restaurant in Rittenhouse next month, so I think I may finally be able to escape corporate America’s prison. I just like to work, And there’s a way to do it if you’re just willing to work hard. Most people are too lazy for that. I think I’ve finally found a happy balance to my life.”

“How’s your social life?”

“It’s good. Monday after work I went home and watched Netflix, Tuesday met with my friend and closed my favorite bar, Wednesday, had dinner with Church, and last night I took my employee out for gelato at one the best restaurants in the city. So, rockin’ while I keep all wheels on the ground. How’s your life been?”

Tune in tomorrow for the conclusion!
